Synthesize Knowledge
Demonstrates ability to read and understand educational literature related to Educational Technology
Demonstrates ability to describe fundamental theories of human learning
Applies knowledge of human learning, diversity, and effective pedagogy to solutions of problems
Synthesizing knowledge is a challenging task. I have learned to discern opinions from facts, especially in a discipline that was new to me. My background in education helped me in connecting some of the dots as they overlapped with the basics of language learning. I had a better understanding of how humans process information and how this understanding can guide me in employing the proper learning tools and the role technology plays in enhancing the entire process.

In this paper, I investigated the available literature on effective online feedback strategies. As a language teacher educator, providing feedback in many different forms is crucial to my student’s success. Delivering language courses and language teaching courses online requires utilizing various applications to respond to the demands of the needed interaction between instructors and students. Reviewing over fifty scholarly articles, I successfully synthesized information provided by numerous scholars to provide answers on (1) using student perceptions to inform teacher-trainers, instructors, and instructional designers in providing effective feedback, (2) devising ways for instructors to address the challenges in providing feedback, and (3) exploring technical tools and applications to support instructors in addressing the demands of providing timely and quality feedback. As an instructional designer, answers to the third question inform potential design features of the course. Where I work, I am both the SME and the ID, so understanding how languages are learned and how to teach language strongly influences the course design. Through this assignment, I sharpened my knowledge and skills; later, I became part of a team that launched one of the first Intensive English Programs designed specifically for online delivery.
The second paper is the last case study assigned in the Advanced Design Course. I showcased my ability to come up with solutions to problems by designing a prototype touchscreen kiosk for an environmental museum in Australia. In order to plan for the design, a good amount of research was needed to have a better understanding of the context and a better sense of evaluating the proper styles and techniques to maximize usability. I also had to go back to the human learning theories as I conceptualized usability and learnability for children, adults, and senior citizens.
